Fumigation Services for the Tobacco Industry
The chain of fumigation starts pre-season when two teams from FIM set out from Tete and Beira, to spray and clean the Mozambique Agronomy and Storage facilities. Our fumigation services include spraying for the tobacco beetle, prior to receiving tobacco for the new season.
Once the tobacco is received in Tete, it is sent to Green tobacco for processing. The entire processing facility in Tete is monitored on a weekly basis by the MLT staff, reading all the beetle traps and plotting a comprehensive map of the entire site. In conjunction with MLT management, the spraying and fogging regularity is determine and a programme for the season is put into place. Prior to the start of a new season, the entire processing facility is thoroughly cleaned and sprayed. All unsold stock in our storage facilities is fumigated and covered for the entire off-season. The tobacco is monitored by placing traps under the fumigation sheets; should re-infestation occur, the products will be thoroughly fumigated again before dispatch.
The dispatched tobacco is then received in Beira and either packed straight into containers in the various storage facilities, or put into stacks in the warehouses and fumigated prior to shipping. Any tobacco that is meant for longer storage remains covered and is monitored and treated for rising beetle counts, both inside the stack and the facility in general. All the warehouses in Beira that store and pack tobacco, including Aquarius Beira Port, Beira International Logistics Terminal, Bridge Shipping and Transcom-Sharaf, are monitored in conjunction with local management. Hygiene reports are also forwarded to the relevant tobacco producers and shipping managers for assessment. Tobacco is normally re-fumigated if it remains in the port of discharge for longer than six weeks.
Packed containers are fumigated at the various storage facilities. All fumigants are removed after fumigation and containers are sealed for shipment. A fumigation certificate will be issued for each container.
Mozambique Leaf Tobacco has an additional small processing facility in the city of Chimoio, where dark fired tobacco is processed and packed. Again, FIM closely works with management in the monitoring, hygiene, beetle counts, spraying and fogging.
At FIM, tobacco processing is our core business and the very reason we were established in Beira was to facilitate the export of beetle-free tobacco from the Beira port. We now also treat tobacco products from the entire SADAC region that uses Beira as an export facility, including Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique. Fumigation International offers fumigation services in Mozambique and Malawi for the tobacco industry including the spraying of tobacco in the shipping industry.
