If you live in Africa, then you surely understand that flies are a way of life. Our hot climate, coupled with the aridness of the drier regions or the humidity of the tropics, create breeding grounds that flies take advantage of. Africa is also a bountiful land, and although a lot of people suffer from starvation there is a wealth of unprocessed and raw foodstuffs in the form of crops and/or food waste.
Flies invade both our homes and our businesses, causing health hazards and generally being an annoyance. Because of this Africans develop new and interesting ways of eliminating flies in African homes. Here’s three popular and effective methods of eliminating flies in African homes.
- Fly paper strips are a popular method of eliminating flies, and they work very well. Fly strips are available in most cash stores and warehouses in Africa as they are usually bought in bulk. This also makes fly strips incredibly cheap. Fly strips work well in Africa because the humidity and heat allows the scent from the strips to travel, attracting flies from a great distance. The heat also makes the adhesive on the strips extra sticky. The only problem is that fly strips are ugly, so put them in places where visitors cannot easily see them.
- If you’re a homeowner or business owner in Africa, it’s worth hitting the big city’s shopping centres to look for an electric fly swatter. The handheld fly swatter has a mesh ‘racquet’ head that sends a sharp electric current through the metal mesh. Keep it around living rooms, bomas and bedrooms to quickly zap any passing irritation. They are a bit more expensive than normal fly-swats, but they work very well.
- Using a plastic bag (clear plastic or shopping bag) mix water with a few bits of raw mince, fruit and/or fish. The mixture is designed to create an attractive smell for the flies so that they fly into the bag, and get stuck in the water at the bottom. Tie off the top of the bag (making sure to leave small openings into which flies can enter), and then hook the bag to either a stake in the garden or a hook on a store room ceiling. The idea is to have the fish and meat rot, so this is not a great method to use indoors, but it is really effective.
